At first glance, Canary Wharf wouldn’t be our top pick for summer - the capital’s financial district doesn’t usually spell F-U-N. But on closer inspection, there’s actually a lot going on! From beach volleyball to secret gardens and vintage pop-ups, Canary Wharf is definitely cooler than your average financial district…
Pop Up Vintage Fairs London will be coming to Canary Wharf on the second Wednesday of the month from June until September, bringing with them a treasure trove of handpicked vintage goodies. The stalls will be different each month, selling everything from clothing and jewellery to collectables, furniture and vintage curiosities. Get down to Cabot Square and get rummaging!
We Brits love a bit of al fresco sport action, and the big Summer Screen in Canada Square Park is the place to be to watch Wimbledon. Make the most of the warm weather and take a picnic with you, and obviously head to the Plateau pop-up bar to celebrate (or drown your sorrows…) with a cocktail. The screen will be up all season with a busy program of sport, films, entertainment and cultural events.
Despite the initial concrete jungle appearance, there are actually some lush green spaces hidden amongst the skyscrapers. The Bloom & Grow event takes place from 16th to the 19th of June, offering a packed programme of talks, workshops and walks exploring Canary Wharf’s secret gardens. The very exotic Roof Garden at Crossrail Place will also be featuring as part of Open Garden Squares Weekend (18th and 19th).
Ok, if you needed any more convincing – Canary Wharf is definitely the only Financial District in the whole world with its own beach. 200 tonnes of sand are arriving in July to create two pop-up beach volleyball courts in Montgomery Square. Hosting the annual Action For Kids’ championship game, the courts will also be available for business to business tournaments, as well as professional showcase matches and even a beach bar.
After a full day of beach volleyball, vintage shopping and garden tours, you surely deserve a cocktail, no? Plateau is the perfect spot for an al fresco afternoon drink, perched four stories up in Canada Place. Time your visit between 5pm and 7pm to take advantage of their Flower Hour £7 cocktails, then stay for an equally floral six course tasting menu. They also serve a very decadent bottomless brunch on Saturdays, as well as a great value set menu.
